چکیده

The optical appearance of etched alpha-particle tracks in CR-39 SSNTDs under the transmission mode of the optical microscope were studied. The mean grey levels revealed using a digital camera installed on the microscope, together with the major and minor axes were systematically determined for tracks from alpha particles with different incident energies and angles. The grey level properties for the same track could vary to large extents, which could be corrected using optimum operation conditions of the camera. Differentiation among recorded tracks was then automated using a computer program, for which the grey levels, major and minor axes values were used as inputs and from which the angle and energy of the incident alpha particles were given as the outputs. The accuracy of the determined alpha-particle energy is 0.5MeV. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effects of UVC irradiation on alpha-particle track parameters in CR-39

The effects of UVC exposure on the track etch rate Vt and the detector sensitivity V of CR-39 SSNTDs were investigated through the diameters and depths of alpha-particle tracks. Both the bulk etch rate Vb and Vt increased but V decreased. The track diameters and depths were used to derive a V function for CR-39 detectors with and without UV irradiation. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Simple preparation of thin CR-39 detectors for alpha-particle radiobiological experiments

Alpha-particle radiobiological experiments involve irradiating cells with alpha particles and require accurate positions where the alpha particles hit the cells. In the present work, we prepared thin CR-39 detectors from commercially available CR-39 SSNTDs with a thickness of 100 lm by etching them in 1 N NaOH/ethanol at 40 C to below 20 lm. The desired final thickness was achieved within 8 h. ...

Studies of biocompatibility of chemically etched CR-39 SSNTDs in view of their applications in alpha-particle radiobiological experiments

Alpha-particle radiobiological experiments involve irradiating cells with alpha particles and require thin biocompatible materials which can record alpha-particle traversals as substrates for cell cultures. The biocompatibilities of chemically etched CR-39 solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) using aqueous NaOH or NaOH/ehtanol are studied through the abundance and morphology of the cult...

Determination of alpha-particle track depths in CR-39 detector from their cross-sections and replica heights

A challenging task in the application of solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) is the measurement of depths of the tracks. One approach involves breaking and polishing the side of SSNTDs to reveal the cross-sections of the tracks for direct measurements. Recently, surface profilometry was used to measure the heights of the replicas of alpha-particle tracks to give the track depths. In th...

Effects of etching time on alpha tracks in solid state nuclear track detectors.

Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors (SSNTDs) are used extensively for monitoring alpha particle radiation, neutron flux and cosmic ray radiation. Radon gas inhalation is regarded as being a significant contributory factor to lung cancer deaths in the UK each year. Gas concentrations are often monitored using CR39 based SSNTDs as the natural decay of radon results in alpha particles which form t...
